Advice from Massachusetts Hokies

I have been offered a position in Cambridge, MA near the Alewife station. We would like to live out of town and commute in.

Any suggestions for great, not crazy expensive, places to live within an hour drive or public transportation? We plan to buy a house, and need at least a small yard for the dog.

Any additional Boston area suggestions are also welcome.
